PATtech: Certificate Integrity.

How PATtech prevents Double-Counting

The core mechanism for Energy Rights exclusivity is data capture at the point of generation combined with single-use retirement. PATtech captures green energy reporting rights at the point of generation, allowing generators to monetise the renewable energy attributes while ensuring that consumers, through purchasing those rights in the form of a Renewable Energy Guarantee of Origin (REGO), can report emissions with verified accuracy.

Once a certificate is issued to a generator, it travels through a chain of custody.  When the token is sold to a consumer and ultimately retired, it is permanently removed from circulation. Retirement ensures the certificate is permanently removed from the market and cannot be re-sold.

PATtech's rules-based engine ensures that allocations are managed accurately and in compliance with user-defined requirements, minimising the risk of errors and enhancing overall efficiency. This rules engine is what automates the prevention of the same MWh being claimed twice the system enforces that each certificate can only be matched to one consumer claim.

Linking Each Certificate to a Specific Asset and Time Period

PATtech's most distinctive design feature, temporal granularity, tied to the originating asset. REGO’s provide certification for every unit of renewable energy used, ensuring accurate Scope 2 reporting under the GHG Protocol.

Each certificate therefore carries two anchors:

Asset anchor the specific generation facility (e.g. a wind farm, solar plant) registered in the platform.

Time anchor the interval (sub-hourly) in which that energy was physically generated.

Consumers gain access to verified certificates temporally matched to consumption through PATtech’s platform and its unique matching algorithms, enabling accurate Scope 2 reporting.

Temporal matching is key; it is not just a claim that renewable energy existed somewhere on the grid that year; it is tied to when the electrons were generated and when they were consumed.

Tracking unique claims in a multi-system environment

The NZ renewable energy environment has at least 3 suppliers of renewable certification. through PATtech REGOs and NZECS RECs and the iREC system. In the absence of a centralised registry PATtech ensures exclusivity through a requirement that Generators disclose and allocation of generation issued through “other channels”.  Whilst PATtech does not need details on counterparties or channels it is required that volume and reporting period are advised to ensure that these renewables are removed from the supply chain and marked to prevent “double sale”.

Making the Audit Trail Navigable

PATtech delivers certified and auditable reports via customisable dashboards, downloadable reporting and certification via APIs, CSVs or PDFs. These reports are essential for demonstrating commitment to sustainability.

The platform ensures complete transparency over the chain of custody from generation to consumption, meeting carbon accounting standards of Completeness, Accuracy, and Consistency.

The audit trail is navigable because the chain of custody, from issuance at the generator, through transfer to consumer and retirement is logged against the certificate's unique identifiers. Regulators and auditors can query any point in that chain.
